How to Choose the Right Dog Breed for You and Your Family

Thinking about getting a dog? Great choice! Dogs are loving, fun, full of character and can even help with your mental health. But picking the right one isn’t just about choosing the cutest pup or the latest trendy breed (even though adorable dog photos are hard to resist). It’s about finding a dog that matches your lifestyle, your home and your energy.

If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry — we’ve put together a simple, practical guide to help you find the perfect four-legged friend for you and your family.

Consider your lifestyle first

Let’s start with the basics: what’s your day-to-day like?

  • Active family? Consider a high-energy breed like a Labrador Retriever, Border Collie or Springer Spaniel. These dogs love long walks, runs, and hikes (perfect if you’re near a greenway or love a stroll up the Wicklow Mountains).
  • Busy household with work or school runs? A lower-energy breed like a Maltese Terrier or even a retired Greyhound might be more manageable.
  • Older adults or less mobile family members? Think about a smaller, affectionate breed that doesn't need a lot of exercise. Breeds like the Maltese or Bichon Frise offer comfort and emotional support, making them ideal companions.

What kind of home do you live in?

  • Apartment or city living: Some breeds do just fine in small spaces—like Bichon Frise, Yorkshire Terrier, or even Whippets (who are surprisingly chill for their size).
  • Detached house with a garden: Larger breeds like German Shepherds, Setters or Golden Retrievers will enjoy the extra room to roam.
  • Rural areas: You might consider working breeds like Collies or Terriers — but keep in mind they’ll need lots of mental stimulation to avoid boredom (and digging holes in your garden!).

And remember: if you have a garden, that doesn't mean a dog can be left outside all day. They’re social creatures who need to be part of the family.

Think about the kids

If you’ve got small children, you’ll want a breed known for being gentle, patient and not too nippy.

  • Great with kids: Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Beagles and Cocker Spaniels tend to be family favourites.
  • Older children or teenagers: You can be more flexible but still look for dogs with a steady temperament.

Whatever breed you choose, supervision is key, especially in the early days when everyone’s getting used to each other.

Grooming, allergies and other practical considerations

Let’s talk fur. Some dogs shed like mad. Others barely drop a hair.

  • Low-shedding (and allergy-friendly): Poodles, Bichon Frise and Schnauzers are often good picks.
  • High-maintenance coats: Breeds like the Old English Sheepdog or Lhasa Apso are gorgeous but need regular grooming, preferably by a professional groomer.
  • Easy-care coats: Short-haired breeds like Grey Hounds or Jack Russells need minimal brushing.

Also consider long-term health, vet costs and life span. Some purebreds are prone to issues, so it’s worth checking with your vet or local shelter before committing.

Adopt or shop — do it responsibly

There are loads of brilliant dogs waiting for homes in Ireland, and adoption is an amazing option.

  • Thinking of rescuing? Dogs Trust Ireland, the ISPCA, and your local SPCA have dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds looking for loving homes. They’ll help match you with a dog that suits your family’s lifestyle.
  • Prefer a puppy or specific breed? If you buy from a breeder, make sure they’re registered and ethical. Avoid puppy farms — always ask to see where the pup was raised and meet the mum.

Not sure? Talk to an expert

If you’re not 100% certain which breed suits you, don’t guess. Call your local vet, visit a rescue centre or talk to a trainer. The right advice upfront can save years of stress — for you and your future dog.
