How to Give Your Car the Spring Clean It Deserves

After months of cold mornings, wet roads and dirty footprints, your car has likely taken a bit of a battering. Spring is the perfect time to refresh it inside and out. A proper clean not only makes your car look better, it can also protect its value and make driving feel that little bit more enjoyable. Giving your car a thorough spring clean does not need to be complicated. With a little time and attention, you can restore that fresh, well-kept feeling and deal with the wear and tear left behind by winter.

Start with a proper exterior wash

Winter roads leave behind more than just visible dirt. Salt, grit and road film can build up over time and, if left untreated, may damage paintwork. Begin with a full rinse to remove loose debris before washing the bodywork with warm water and a car-specific shampoo. Work from the top down, rinsing regularly to avoid streaks. Pay particular attention to the lower panels and wheel arches, where grime tends to gather. Once clean, drying the car with a soft microfibre cloth helps prevent water marks and gives a smoother finish.

Don’t forget the undercarriage and wheels

The underside of your car is often overlooked, yet it takes the brunt of winter conditions. If possible, use a pressure washer to rinse underneath and around the wheel wells. This helps remove salt and grit that can contribute to corrosion over time. Wheels deserve special care too. Brake dust and dirt build up quickly, so using a dedicated wheel cleaner and brush can restore their appearance and prevent long-term staining.

Refresh the interior

The inside of your car often shows winter’s impact more than the outside. Muddy shoes, damp coats and everyday clutter can quickly make the interior feel tired. Start by removing rubbish and personal items. Take out floor mats and give them a thorough shake and wash. Vacuum seats, carpets and hard-to-reach corners, including under the seats where crumbs and dust gather unnoticed. Wipe down dashboards, door panels and steering wheels with appropriate cleaning products to remove grime and fingerprints. A clean interior not only looks better but also creates a more comfortable driving environment.

Clean the windows inside and out

Clear visibility is essential for safe driving. Over time, windows can develop a film on the inside from condensation and everyday use. Use a quality glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth to clean both sides of the windows and mirrors. Pay extra attention to the windscreen, as streaks can become distracting in bright sunlight.

Check and top up liquids

Spring cleaning is also a good opportunity to carry out basic maintenance checks. Ensure windscreen washer fluid is topped up, especially as pollen and dust increase during this time of year. Replace worn wiper blades

Winter weather can be tough on wiper blades. If they leave streaks or make noise across the windscreen, it may be time to replace them. New blades are inexpensive and can significantly improve visibility during sudden showers.

Protect the paintwork

Once your car is clean and dry, applying a  coat of wax adds protection and enhances shine. Wax creates a barrier against dirt, rain and UV rays, helping to preserve the finish. Even a simple polish can make a noticeable difference and keep your car looking newer for longer.

Declutter the boot

The boot often becomes a storage space for everything from sports gear to emergency supplies. Take time to remove unnecessary items and check that essentials such as a spare tyre, emergency kit, jack and warning triangle are in good condition. A tidy boot means less weight and more space when you actually need it.
