10 Signs Your Dog Really Loves You

Dogs have a special way of showing affection. From wagging tails to gentle snuggles, their actions can speak louder than words. Here are ten ways your dog might be letting you know how much they love you.

Tail wagging

A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a dog is happy, but the way they wag can give you clues. A slow, side-to-side wag with the tail slightly upright usually signals contentment. If your dog greets you with a happy wag when you walk into a room, it’s a clear sign they adore you.

Eye contact

Dogs that are fond of their owners often hold gentle eye contact. Studies show that when dogs look at you, it can trigger the release of oxytocin—the “love hormone”—in both of you. So when your dog gazes at you with soft eyes, it’s their way of saying they care.

Bringing you toys

When a dog offers you their toys, it’s a sign of trust and affection. They’re sharing something they value with you, showing they feel close and comfortable in your presence.

Staying close

Dogs often cuddle up to or lean on people they love. This closeness makes them feel safe and calm, and it’s comforting for you too. The bond is mutual.

Following you around

If your dog likes to follow you from room to room, it’s a sign they enjoy being near you. This behaviour reflects attachment and loyalty, though dogs also need their alone time to stay happy and balanced.

Protectiveness

Dogs naturally protect those they care about. If your dog guards you or keeps watch over your home, it’s their way of showing love and loyalty—they want to keep you safe.

“Talking” to you

Some dogs are more vocal than others, but barking, whining, or other sounds can be ways to express affection. If your dog gets excited and makes noise when they see you, it’s likely a sign of attachment.

Jumping up

Jumping can sometimes be about excitement or attention-seeking, but it’s also a way dogs show joy and affection. They’re happy to see you and want to get close. Training can help keep this behaviour polite without taking away their enthusiasm.

Responding to commands

Dogs who listen and respond well to training often do so out of trust and a desire to please you. Following commands strengthens your bond, and they enjoy the positive feedback they get from you.

Mirroring your emotions

Dogs are surprisingly empathetic. They can sense when you’re happy, sad, or stressed and adjust their behaviour accordingly. For example, if you’re feeling down, your dog might come sit with you, offering comfort and companionship.
