Contents Insurance FAQs
Your contents cover should reflect the total replacement cost of everything you own like furniture, electronics, clothing, kitchenware, jewellery, and other personal items. Go room by room and estimate what it would cost to replace everything new today. Most people underestimate their contents value, so take your time.
With An Post Insurance, you can choose Contents Cover as a percentage of your buildings sum insured (e.g. 30% of €200,000 = €60,000) or as a separate lump sum.
Landlord's Insurance covers both the building and any contents you provide in the rental property. It is designed for landlords who own the full property.
Landlord's Contents Insurance covers only the contents like furniture, appliances, and household goods, and is designed for situations where the building is already insured separately, such as apartments in managed developments.
Both include Public and Personal Liability Cover up to €3 million.
Visit our Landlord's Insurance and Landlord's Contents Insurance pages for full details.
Buildings Insurance covers the structure of your home, everything from the walls, roof, floors, and fixed fittings like kitchens and bathrooms. Contents Insurance covers your belongings including furniture, electronics, clothes, and other items you would take with you if you moved. Most homeowners choose Combined Buildings and Contents Cover for full protection. Buildings-Only Cover is available with Allianz by calling us on 0818 22 22 22.
Contents Insurance typically covers furniture, electronics, clothing, jewellery, artwork, household appliances, and other personal belongings. Depending on your insurer, your policy may also include cover for personal money. With Aviva, this extends to credit and debit cards; Allianz covers personal money but not credit/debit cards specifically. High-value individual items (such as engagement rings or expensive watches) may need to be specified separately on your policy. Refer to your policy booklet for the specific terms and cover that apply.
Your standard contents policy covers your belongings inside your home. If you want to protect items outside the home, you can add optional extra cover for an additional charge. It is not necessary to purchase this optional extra in order to purchase a Home Insurance policy. There are two ways to add this cover:
- Unspecified items: This covers personal belongings such as jewellery, watches, and electronics when they are away from your home, without listing each item individually. The amount you choose is the total value covered for all unspecified items combined. Single item limits generally range from €1,500 to €3,500, with lower limits for personal money and a €500 bicycle limit. For Aviva policies, the minimum unspecified cover is €5,000. Call us if you need cover over €15,000. More information can be found in your policy schedule and booklet.
- Specified items: This provides cover for individual high-value items that you want to insure separately. Each item is listed with its own value and is covered for its full specified amount, including when outside your home. This is recommended for items that exceed the single-item limit under unspecified cover.*
Contact An Post Insurance on 0818 22 22 22 or get a quote online for details on adding cover for items outside your home.
*Limits apply: Aviva: Max 50% of CSI (including unspecified all risks) and max individual item €50k. Allianz: Max €40k including unspecified items without referral (anything above needs to be referred) and €10k individual item without referral, anything over is a referral.
The best approach is to go room by room and estimate the replacement cost of everything you own, stating not what you paid for it, but what it would cost to buy new today. Include furniture, electronics, clothing, kitchenware, and valuables. Most people underestimate their contents value, so take your time.
