Is Car Insurance cheaper for women in Ireland?

No, car insurance in Ireland is priced the same for men and women. Since a 2011 European Court of Justice ruling, insurers cannot consider gender when calculating premiums. Instead, everyone is offered the same policies and prices, with cover tailored to their individual needs. Your car insurance cost is based on factors like your driving history, vehicle type, and claims record, not your gender. An Post Insurance searches across our panel of leading Irish insurers to find you the most competitive price for your chosen level of cover.

We value your feedback

The staff that looked after my renewal were all excellent. I was changing my car a few days before renewal and they took care of everything. They helped me with my payment (I was stressed at the time) and were so patient. Overall, very happy with the service. Janette 1st - Mar - 2026

Women's Car Insurance FAQs

There are several ways to reduce your Car Insurance Premium:

  • Adding a voluntary excess on top of your compulsory excess can lower your cost. The options available will be shown during the quote process.
  • Paying your premium in one annual payment is usually cheaper than monthly instalments, which include a service fee of up to 12%.
  • Building a claims-free driving record earns you a No Claims Discount that increases each year, up to a maximum that varies by insurer.
  • Choosing a car with a smaller engine (under 1.4 litres) can also help.
  • If you are a young or first-time driver, BoxClever Telematics Insurance* may contribute to more competitive premiums at renewal by rewarding safe driving.

No, not since a European Court of Justice ruling on gender discrimination in 2011. Now Car Insurance premiums are priced the same for men and women, based on other factors such as driving history and claims record.

No, or at least not because they are women. Insurance premiums are calculated individually and can vary depending on driving experience, vehicle type, and claims history, not gender.

Your premium may be influenced by a number of factors, including your driving experience, vehicle type, and level of cover selected. Discounts may also be available for drivers with a strong no-claims history.

As a named driver on someone else's policy (such as a parent's or partner's), you can build Named Driving Experience (NDE). This is a record of your claims-free driving history while driving under someone else's policy. When you take out your own policy, your NDE may entitle you to a discount. However, Named Driving Experience is not the same as a No Claims Bonus. Only the policyholder earns NCB. The acceptance and discount offered for NDE varies by insurer.

Yes, you can add another driver to your policy as a named driver. Adding a named driver may affect your premium depending on their age, experience, and driving history. Named drivers earn Named Driving Experience (NDE), not No Claims Bonus. Only the policyholder earns No Claims Bonus.
