2024’s Key Trends: An Interior Designer’s Outlook

What do An Post Insurance and EZ Living Furniture have in common? Well, apart from serving Irish customers for 25 years, both provide everything you need to make a house a home, from  soft furnishings to insurance protection.

While the cost of construction remains high, there’s been no slow-down in the public’s appetite for renovations with more than €11 billion invested in home improvements in recent years. And now with grants available for energy efficiency works and renovations to derelict property, many of us may be wondering if now is the time to finally make the transformation we’ve been dreaming of.

Sinead Tormay, EZ Living Furniture’s in-house interior designer, helps families all around Ireland do just that, making the most of their spaces with smart choices in furniture, décor and home comforts. She’s highlighted her favourite 2024 key trends here for us. Check out our video below to see what she has to say.

Cosy colour schemes

For 2024, we will continue to see a move towards cosy colour schemes featuring browns, greens and earthy neutrals alongside natural, textured materials and metal accents in warm hues. This is showing up most noticeably in paint selections where creams, beiges and mushroom shades are being favoured as the base for entire home colour schemes. Current warm and neutral favourites are Colourtrend’s ‘Ivory Tusk’ and Farrow & Ball’s ‘Skimming Stone’.

Curves & sculptural shapes

There’s a trend towards rebalancing the sharp lines, cool materials and lifeless colours seen over the last 20 years, and designers are doing this by introducing curves and sculptural shapes into homes. Everything from furniture, rugs, art and accessories to architectural features like archways, coving and wall panelling are now taking on more natural and organic forms. The addition of a round side table in a sitting room, an arched or round mirror in an entryway, or a round tray on your rectangular dining tables would help to balance the look of your home.

Biophilic design

This year, there’s a big emphasis on biophilic design. This interior design practice aims to blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors. It focuses on connecting the homeowner with the natural world, whether that’s using indoor plants, nature-inspired accessories or outdoor seating and dining areas.

Quiet luxury

This trend features key elements such as subtle colour schemes, quiet nods to old-world wealth, and classic design choices. It’s understated, restrained and muted. Rather than focusing on quantity, quiet luxury is all about quality. A simple way to bring this trend into a home is to mix heirloom pieces of art or accent furniture with a modern sofa or dining table.

Curated spaces with unique personality

Homeowners are encouraged to embrace their authenticity this season and curate their homes to reflect their individual tastes. The idea is to create a space with unique, personal touches which showcase their lives and interests. There are no rules, so don’t be afraid to add a touch of whimsy when it comes to art, accessories and soft furnishings. Some might say this trend is all about unfollowing the latest trends!
