Driver Number

Due to changes in Road Traffic Legislation, due to take effect from 1 December 2024, all insurers and insurance intermediaries, including An Post Insurance, must collect driver numbers for every driver named on motor insurance policies.

Top 5 Questions

Open Driving is an optional extra that allows other drivers to use your car with your permission, as long as they meet the age and licence requirements set by your insurer.

AIG and Aviva allow drivers aged 25–70 with a full EU/UK licence and no penalty points.

FBD allows ages 25-71 with up to 6 non-court-awarded penalty points.

Allianz allows ages 30-70 with no more than 6 penalty points.

Open Driving can be added for an extra cost. It is not necessary to purchase this optional extra in order to purchase a Car Insurance policy.

Step-back No Claims Discount (NCD) is an optional extra that allows you to keep part of your No Claims Discount if you make a claim. Instead of losing your entire discount, it 'steps back' by a set amount rather than being removed entirely. The step-back scale varies by insurer. With Allianz, step-back is included as standard.

Step-back NCD is not required to purchase a policy.

Protected No Claims Discount (NCD) is an optional extra that allows you to make one or two claims in a three-year period without losing your No Claims Discount. Windscreen, fire, and theft claims are not counted. The cost is an additional premium on top of your standard Car Insurance. It is not required to purchase a policy. It is available for customers who want to safeguard the discount they have built up.
